MIDTERM EXAM
Field Research and Report (150 possible points)
In order to identify the challenges facing today’s nonprofit human resources managers, you are
to arrange and conduct an interview with a human resources manager of a nonprofit in the
city/town you are residing in this summer. Take extensive notes during the interview or ask for
permission to tape the interview and then transcribe it later. The questions each of you will ask
the HR Manager you interview are these:
First, ask general questions:
1) What is your official title?
2) How long have you been in this position at this nonprofit?
3) When was this nonprofit founded and what is its mission? (Students: You may be able to
find this information on the nonprofit’s website. If so, you do not need to ask this question.)
4) How many administrators and staff does the nonprofit have?
5) How many volunteers does the nonprofit have?
Next, ask the core questions:
1) Please tell me the top three challenges you are facing as a HR Manager.
2) Please discuss those challenges in detail.
3) How have you addressed those challenges?
NOTE: The same HR Manager or other HR official in a nonprofit cannot be interviewed by
more than one student. As such, discuss which nonprofit you are interested in and whom you
plan to interview at that nonprofit via D2L “Communication/Discussions” section established for
Field Research and Report assignment. In other words, there are 14 students in this course and
there should be interviews with 14 different HR Managers who represent different nonprofits.
This assignment will result in a 3-5 page report (typed, double-spaced, using Times New Roman
12-point font, and have one inch margins on each side. A cover page with your name, name of
class, date, and name of assignment (Field Research) must be included.) The report will include
(1) an Introduction section that covers the purpose of the assignment, whom you interviewed,
when the interview was conducted, and it answers the general questions above as well as (2) a
Findings section that discusses the answers to the core questions above, which is followed by (3)
a brief Summary section that summarizes what you learned. The Field Research and Report
assignment is due no later than midnight on June 18 – earlier if at all possible.
A D2L “Communication/Discussions” section for Field Research and Report assignment will be
added to your D2L course support.
